Westar Energy Employees to Mentor Williams Magnet Students
A Big Brothers Big Sisters orientation luncheon was held yesterday at Westar Energy. Westar has signed on to be part of BBBS' Corporate Bigs program, in which pairs of mentors and children spend time together at the mentors' workplace.
Ten Westar Bigs have been paired with students from Topeka Public Schools' Williams Science and Fine Arts Magnet Elementary School. About once a week, the children will ride a bus to Westar after school. Once there, they will spend time with their mentors and work on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related projects.
Jerl Banning, Westar Vice President of Human Resources and Information Technology, is excited about Westar's partnership with BBBS. "The best things happen when people share their strengths and mutual interests," he said.
We couldn't agree more, Jerl! Thank you, Westar Energy employees, for taking time out of your busy day to make a difference in the life of a child!
